Celebrations for the reopening of the Museum of Lisbon - Roman Theatre | 20, 25, 27, 28 and 30 SEPT | Museum of Lisbon - Roman Theatre

Detalles

September 2025 will mark ten years since the museum reopened.

Between 2013 and 2015, the then-named ‘Roman Theatre Museum’ closed for renovation and restoration work, dictated by the completion of archaeological work that had been going on inside the museum since 2001, the year the museum opened.
These excavations provided a better understanding of the architecture of the Roman theatre and how it was built on the hill, especially on the side facing the Tagus River. The work also uncovered a 17th-century dwelling that took advantage of the large terraces of the theatre built to the south, and revealed intense human occupation prior to its construction in the early 1st century.
The reopening of the museum in 2015 also marked the beginning of a new form of management, particularly with its integration into the company EGEAC, now known as ‘Lisboa Cultura’. This was the start of intensive work to open the museum to the public and create a cultural programme that would bring life to the archaeological site and its museum.
A new life for a museum and an archaeological site that seeks to give the city back a stage with more than 2000 years of history.
