From scraps of fabric, whether it be a piece of lace, an old shirt, part of a jacket lining, or any number of things drawn from the textile world, Sónia Gomes creates organic sculpture.
The Brazilian visual artist, born in Caetanópolis, Minas Gerais, is exhibiting in Lisboa for the first time.
Considered one of the leading figures in contemporary art in Brazil, Gomes infuses each piece with the rhythms of her native land, a small textile town.
For her, fabric is not so much a medium as a way of seeing and engaging with the world.
