Dettagli

Miriam Cahn (Basel, 1949) is a prominent figure on the European contemporary art scene. Her work has received widespread critical and institutional acclaim in recent years, following important exhibitions at Palais de Tokyo (Paris), Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid), Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Haus der Kunst (Munich), Documenta 14 (2017) and Venice Art Biennale (1984 and 2022).

Miriam Cahn's artistic practice, in which painting and drawing feature prominently, but which also includes other media such as sculpture, installation, video, and photography, explores topics related to her objection to all forms of oppression and reaction to current social and political issues, including gender violence, migratory problems and armed conflicts. Her work is strongly imbued with the motivations, attitudes and discourses that marked the feminist movements of the 1970s and 80s.

The body is central to her work. According to the curators of the exhibition, João Pinharanda and Sérgio Mah: “The body as a domain with a number of thematic resonances, but also as a creative medium (kindling and adding to certain ways of looking, drawing, painting...), is the core of the artist's imagery.”

This is the artist's first solo exhibition in Portugal, featuring 160 works that primarily showcase her recent works, alongside some selected pieces from the 1970s, 80s and 90s.
