Church of the Antigo Mosteiro de Jesus

Take a trip five centuries back in time 30 km outside Lisbon. The church of the Antigo Mosteiro de Jesus is an old and impressive building that you should visit.

Details

Discover one of the first churches built in the Manueline style in Lisbon that curiously isn’t in the city.

In Setúbal, just a short drive from the capital, you’ll find the most impressive building in the city where the Treaty of Tordesilhas was ratified.

Designed by Diogo Boitaca in 1494, it was completed in 1500 and later renovated and extended on various occasions.

The impressive Manueline vault in the choir, as well as the arches made of Arrábida stone, unique to Portugal, make a visit to this church, which is in excellent condition, worthwhile.

The highlights, however, are the eighteen azulejo panels of the 16th and 17th centuries, depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin, the gilded woodwork on the high altar, the Chapter House and the Sacristy.

Travel five centuries in time in under 30 km.
