Atelier-Museum Júlio Pomar

Discover the life and work of one of Portugal’s greatest painters, an artist whose unique status within Portuguese art is well worth getting to know better.

Details

The Atelier-Museum Júlio Pomar is one place in Lisbon that lovers of art and architecture shouldn’t miss.

Created by Lisbon Council and the Fundação Júlio Pomar to preserve and divulge the work of this Portuguese modernist painter, it is a place of critical observation and freedom of thought with an eclectic collection of hundreds of artworks exploring a wide range of themes.

With paintings, sculptures, drawings, engravings, ceramics, collage and assemblages, on show is the career of an artist who created by absorbing and breaking rules and styles.

The building was designed by the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira in an austere and stripped down style that is discrete and inspiring.

Though it was never actually used as an Atelier/studio, this was the building’s initial function, thus maintaining the name of one of Lisbon’s most original cultural and museum spaces.
