The three-act drama by Giacomo Puccini, with a libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, based on the play of the same name by Victorien Sardou, is now being performed at the Coliseu dos Recreios.  

Premiered in Rome in 1900, this opera marks a high point of the so-called Italian "Giovine Scuola" — a movement that transformed opera with more realistic and intensely dramatic themes.

Staged in a politically troubled Rome at the beginning of the 19th century, Tosca tells the tragic passion between the singer Floria Tosca and the painter Mario Cavaradossi, persecuted by the ruthless police chief, Baron Scarpia. It is a story of love, jealousy, power and sacrifice, guided by a captivating score, where immortal arias such as “Vissi d’arte”, “E lucevan le stelle” and “Recondita” shine harmony”.
